Exporting & Importing expenses to Tally

Updated over 2 weeks ago

To make things smooth between Pemo and Tally, follow this five-step process:

  1. Mirror your Tally Chart of Accounts in Pemo manually or through a CSV import.

  2. Prepare your Pemo export by assigning the correct Account and Supplier to each expense

  3. Export your expense data from Pemo as a CSV that matches your Tally account setup. See how to set up custom CSV templates here.

  4. Convert the CSV to XML using the template provided.

  5. Import into Tally, review the entries, and make quick adjustments if needed.

Note: Tally is highly customizable but doesn’t support CSV, Excel, or API imports. It only accepts XML files, so converting your data to XML is essential.

Step 1: Sync your Tally setup with Pemo

Tally uses “Ledgers” to track accounts. To ensure everything lines up, your accounts in Pemo must mirror these ledgers.

You can:

  • Create accounts manually in Pemo, or

  • Import them using a CSV file with a column titled “Account” for proper matching.

Export ledgers from Tally

  1. Open your company in Tally.

  2. Navigate to:
Display → Statements of Inventory / Statement of Accounts → Statistics → Ledgers

  3. In the Ledgers screen, press E or click Export

  4. Choose Excel as the format to simplify the import into Pemo.

You can follow the same steps to export your list of suppliers.

Import into Pemo

Use the exported Excel file to upload your accounts into Pemo through the Accounts section.

Step 2: Export transaction from Pemo

Once your accounts and suppliers are mapped:

  • Go to the Transaction tab in Pemo

  • Filter by the required period

  • Export the file using the Tally CSV Template that you set up

Step 3: Convert CSV to XML for Tally

Tally requires XML file imports. Use the provided conversion template for a quick transfer.

Important: Keep all column headers exactly as they appear in the template to avoid errors.

Step 4: Import into Tally

For Tally versions that accept XML

  1. Open the converted XML file.

  2. Import directly into Tally via the import screen.

For Tally versions that accept excel

  1. Save your CSV as an Excel .xlsx file.

  2. In Tally, go to Import → Select Transactions

  3. Choose the saved file and assign your Pemo Mapping Template

  4. Verify the import and check that accounts and suppliers align correctly.

You’ll need to set up a mapping template in Tally that matches Pemo’s column headers with Tally’s fields before this step.
